PROFESSIONAL PERCEPTION OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
CHALLENGES AND PATHWAYS FOR ORAL HEALTH EDUCATION

Periodontal disease, Health education, Oral hygieneAbstract
Periodontal disease represents a major public health concern and remains one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults. Effective prevention and control require not only evidence-based clinical interventions but also educational strategies that foster patient adherence to oral hygiene and supportive periodontal therapy. This observational study assessed dentists’ perceptions of factors associated with periodontal disease and the educational practices implemented in primary care settings. Twenty-five dental surgeons from the municipal health network of Pinheiral, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, participated in the study and completed a structured questionnaire addressing clinical, educational, and organizational aspects of periodontal care. Results indicated that 61% of the professionals believed patients were not adequately informed about periodontal health, and 84% identified poor oral hygiene as the primary cause of the disease. These findings highlight the need for continuous professional development in educational approaches that combine effective communication, motivation for self-care, and individualized guidance. Strengthening dentists’ training with pedagogical and organizational competencies is essential to improving clinical outcomes and consolidating a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to oral health.
