The communication of difficult news from the perspective of residents in cardiology and cardiovascular health

This article aimed to investigate the experience of medical and multiprofessional residents from a cardiology reference hospital regarding the management of communication of difficult news in cardiovascular care contexts. The study presents the perception of cardiology and cardiovascular health residents within the context of clinical practice focused on communicating difficult news. The research was conducted at the Gaspar Vianna Hospital Foundation, Belém-PA. A total of 27 medical and multiprofessional residents from different areas were selected. The study highlighted a significant gap in the residents' training, with a substantial portion reporting the lack of standardized protocols for delivering bad news. Particularly in contexts of death and cardiovascular diseases, this represents a significant challenge for healthcare professionals, given the emotional complexity involved. The research emphasized the need for specific training, such as the use of the SPIKES protocol, to improve the emotional and ethical approach of healthcare professionals. The lack of training compromises communication quality, underscoring the importance of protocols and ongoing training for a more humanized practice.
