The Multispecies Perspective in Biology Education:
A Systematic Review of Brazilian Academic Production
Keywords:
Science Education, Biology Education, Multispecies, Human–nonhuman relationshipsAbstract
This article presents a systematic review of Brazilian academic production on the multispecies perspective in the field of Science Education, with an emphasis on Biology Education, covering the period from 2015 to 2025. It is based on the recognition that relationships between humans and nonhumans, historically marked by anthropocentric and utilitarian conceptions, have been challenged by theoretical approaches that propose the decentralization of the human and the valorization of interdependencies among forms of life. The research, qualitative in nature and descriptive-analytical in character, was conducted using the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD), based on descriptors related to multispecies studies combined with the terms “education” and “biology education.” A total of 277 studies were identified, of which 11 comprised the final corpus after the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria and the removal of duplicates. Content analysis allowed the organization of the results into three categories: (i) nonhuman agency, highlighting the displacement of human centrality in educational processes; (ii) methodological experimentations and inventive narratives, which expand the ways of producing knowledge; and (iii) decolonial dialogues and ethics of (re)existence, which challenge hegemonic epistemologies and value traditional knowledge. It is concluded that the multispecies perspective contributes to expanding the epistemological horizon of Biology Education by proposing practices that are more sensitive, relational, and ethically committed to life in its diversity.
