Abstract

This essay revisits a pedagogical experience developed in 2018 with third-grade elementary school students at a public school linked to the Brazilian federal education system, inspired by Paulo Freire and Antonio Faundez’s pedagogy of questioning. Drawing on records produced by the children, including research notebooks, drawings, and reflective texts, the essay discusses the potential of questions as an organizing principle of pedagogical work and of research as a practice of knowledge production in school. The analysis examines how children formulated questions, developed hypotheses, searched for answers, engaged with different sources, and problematized explanations about the world around them. It also highlights how moments of sharing and discussing research findings fostered dialogue, critical reflection, and engagement with different ways of producing knowledge. Written years after the experience took place and revisited through the lens of motherhood, the essay argues for the pedagogy of questioning and research-based learning as ways of affirming children’s right to knowledge and to participation in investigative processes from the early years of schooling.
