Cognitive changes are common throughout old age. Identifying the fine line between cognitive decline and cognitive impairment (CI) is a major challenge. The presence of cognitive predictors may help us in the evaluation, through a specific screening test, of elderly people with cognitive impairment, treated at the geriatrics service of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Maranhão, which is the objective of this study. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study through the review of 251 medical records with collection of demographic, clinical and therapeutic information, as well as comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). According to the criteria of this research, 213 records were excluded. Using the 10-point Cognitive Screener (10-CS) cognitive screening instrument, we identified 20 patients without cognitive impairment (CI) and 18, suggestive of CI. All patients with CI were independent in activities of daily living (ADLs), being classified as having mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In these patients, the predictors of age, education, altered sleep and other comorbidities demonstrated statistical significance (p<0.05). The identification of these patients in this geriatrics service brings us the possibility of preventive interventions and control of cognitive predictors through interdisciplinary actions that could help prevent the progression of decline and promote neuropsychological rehabilitation.
